SHILLONG, Aug 3: The assurance of the Meghalaya United Alliance (MUA) Government to the people to initiate development works in Langpih has proved to be a farce. During the Budget session of the Assembly, Chief Minister DD Lapang assured all on the floor of the House of earmarking Special Rural Development Funds (SRDF) for the Department of Community and Rural Development (C&RD) to start developmental works in Langpih. But till today, not a single file has come either from the Chief Minister or the Deputy Chief Minister (in-charge of Finance) to start the development works to counter Asom’s development projects at the disputed area. The Chief Minister’s promise has turned to be hollow because no meetings are held so far to discuss the status of development works in Langpih. “We talked about Langpih only on the issue of dispute between the two States, and nothing more than that,” said a senior bureaucrat on condition of anonymity. Lapang could not be contacted for his comments today, but the Minister in-charge of C&RD Martin M Danggo told this correspondent today, “Nothing has come from the SRDF, and starting of the development works will obviously kick start when the funds flow”. He said nothing has been earmarked till date. There was no meeting at the ministerial level to discuss development works for nearly two months.
Meanwhile, the Nepali families who have just moved into the disputed Langpih area have vowed to stick to the decision to stay put in the area. “We are Indian citizens, and we can move and reside at any place under its territory,” said a Nepali resident of Langpih over phone today. THE SENTINEL
