DCs, SPs asked to be stern against disruptive elements

SHILLONG, Aug 3: The Election Commission’s no-excuse mantra for any breakdown in the law-and-order situation has today prompted the Meghalaya Government to direct the district administration of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi and Jaintia Hills districts to act sternly against those who are trying to disturb the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the State.
The clear instructions were issued today hours before the night road blockade called by the Steering Committee Against Murder of Democracy (SCAMoD) came into force this evening. The directive from the State Secretariat came 16 days before the bye-polls to Laitumkhrah Assembly Constituency slated for August 18.

State Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee told this correspondent that the DCs and SPs were given specific orders to ensure that law and order should be maintained in view of the Laitumkhrah bye-elections. “We have told them to act against those who are trying to disturb the peaceful situation,” said Chatterjee. When asked about the reported arrest warrant issued against the leaders of SCAMoD, Chatterjee feigned ignorance. He said: “The law will take its own course, and disruptive elements will not be tolerated.”

Meanwhile, the SCAMoD leaders have gone hiding since they announced the agitational programme in protest against the government’s apathy towards their demands to remove the DGP.

The SCAMoD is determined that it will not call off the agitation programme till the Government complies with its demands. Besides the night road blockade, the SCAMoD has also called night public curfew on August 6 and 7. THE SENTINEL
