SHILLONG, Aug 25: That Shillong is a transit point for transhipment of arms and ammunition to the Black Widow, popularly known as (DHD-J), has been proved yet again the National Investigating Agency (NIA). The Meghalaya Police arrested some arms smugglers and seized arms from DHD(J) rebels in the past two years.
The confessional statements of arms smuggler Vannesem from Mizoram reveals the intensity of DHD-J’s arms smuggling from Shillong. Vannesem was arrested by the Mizoram Police last month after a specific tip-off from the NIA.
A well-placed source told The Sentinel: “Vannesem confessed before the NIA sleuths that on about eight occasions he had handed over arms and ammunition to DHD (J) militants from places on the outskirts of Shillong.” It is learnt that after transshipment of arms from Myanmar, Vannesem used to ferry them to Shillong for money from the rebels on the national highway located outside the city limits.
Sources said that the arms smuggler hailing from Mizoram has been supplying arms to the DHD (J) through Shillong since 2001. The NIA is also looking for Vannasem’s possible network outside the country because he had visited a couple of other south Asian countries on a number of occasions. The NIA was set up after the Mumbai terror attack. THE SENTINEL
