Old issues will come up if Mahanta is banked upon

GUWAHATI, Aug 25: With the AGP coming to terms with former Asom Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar by bringing him in the forefront, the Congress and the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) seem to be ready to rake up some issues that go against Mahanta.

Talking to newsmen in Guwahati today, Asom Government spokesman Himanta Biswa Sarma said if Mahanta takes the mantle of the AGP, some old issues like “secret killings”, cash crunch leading non-payment of employees salaries for months together, an attempt to flout rules to appoint an Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) member etc will come up again. “We want the AGP to be a strong Opposition party in the State, but Mahanta’s homecoming will again weaken the party as the people of the State can never forget issues like secret killings,” he said, and added: “We predicted right before the Lok Sabha polls that Chandra Mohan Patowary would surrender before Mahanta after the polls, and that prediction has come true. For the welfare of the party, instead of surrendering before Mahanta, Patowary should have tendered an apology before the people of Asom for his misdeeds and failure.”

Criticizing Patowary for his denial that the AGP government was not involved in any “secret killings”, Sarma said: “The KN Saikia Commission clearly indicated the involvement of the AGP government and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta in the killings. In accordance with the Commission, we have reopened a number of secret killing cases.”

Speaking to media today, AASU president Sankar Prasad Rai said: “In order to safeguard Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, Chandra Mohan Patowary took to lying. The secret killing episode will continue to haunt Mahanta. We want punishment for the killing of Biswajit Bora during the Hiteswar Saikia regime, Parag Das in the AGP regime and the open and secret killings in the current Congress regime.” THE SENTINEL
