Seven years and still going strong!

GUWAHATI, Aug 25: Dr Malaya Barman has been the Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee president for seven years. According to party policy, all frontal heads have a term of three years only. But the fact that the same person has held the post of Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee president for seven consecutive years has raised a few eyebrows in the Congress camp.

This question was placed before All India Mahila Congress Committee president Dr Prabha Thakur at a press conference in Guwahati last night. Dr Thakur was in the city to attend the workshop on women empowerment that was organized by the Assam Mahila Congress Committee today at the Pragjyoti ITA Centre.

Dr Thakur evaded a direct reply to the question but said no person can hold on to a post permanently, change is imminent.

According to sources, there is growing resentment among a section of Mahila Congress workers over the fact that Dr Malaya Barman has retained the post of Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee president despite the fact that the Congress has fared poorly in her constituency Patach-arkuchi in the recent Lok Sabha, civic and Panchayat polls.
