Women power in Raiganj


Statesman News Service RAIGANJ, Oct. 8: The women members of Milanpara Sarbajanin Durga puja Committee in Raiganj are celebrating golden jubilee this year.They organised a blood donation camp where twenty five people including five female members of their committee donated blood. This puja is famous for its rituals and sanctity. The secretary of Milanpara Sarbajanin Durga puja Committee Mrs Sima Sengupta said, "In 1998 there was a flood in Raiganj. Then our male members were involved in relief work. So we took the charge of organising Durga puja. On Nabami day we observe Kumari puja which pulls the attention of a large crowd. As for immersion our idols are not carried on a lorry. Our male members set the idols on their shoulders and take it to the immersion ghat."This year women also performed Durga puja at Purba Netajipally and Dakshin Debinagar in Raiganj for the first time. Raiganj SDO Mr Animesh Bhattacharjee said, “This year there were four Durga pujas which were organised by women. They also took part in cultural programmes.” source: the statesman
