Sound pollution upsets revellers

MALDA, Oct. 8: Decibel levels rose unchecked at Foara More last night as loudspeakers set up at different points flouted sound pollution norms, alleged a section of revellers.According to them, the sound of loudspeakers at Foara More, close to Chittaranjan Market in the heart of English Bazaar, was supposedly above 65 decibel even after 9.30 p.m., and came down only when a thunderstorm lashed the area after 11 p.m.“Several announcements from different podiums created a very noisy atmosphere where the general public felt very uneasy due to sound pollution,” said 55-year-old Mr Satyajit Basu, adding that the awareness campaign on thalassemia was the loudest.Ironically, some of the podiums were actually set up to extend help and cooperation to revellers if they faced any problems.Mr Chayan Gayen, a Malda pollution control official told The Statesman: “We did not receive any written complaint from the people regarding sound pollution at Foara More. In fact, I did not find such a situation when I went there.” However, he did not specify the time he visited the area.AwardsThe Raiganj Municipality in conjunction with All Raiganj Merchants’ Association and the North Dinajpur district administration, bestowed awards on some Pujas in the town.
