NHRC increases compensation of the family of a deceased prisoner

.
New Delhi October 03, 2008The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Tamil Nadu government to pay a monetary relief of one lakh rupees instead of fifty thousand rupees to the next of kin of the deceased prisoner, Thilagar. He committed suicide while serving life imprisonment in Central Jail, Madurai on October 15, 2002. The Commission found that prima facie the case of violation of human rights had been made out by the jail authorities, which led to his suicide. In response to the show cause notice by the Commission, the Government of Tamil Nadu had sanctioned a sum of fifty thousand rupees only. The Commission increased this amount as it felt that this amount is grossly inadequate for loss of human life. sourcE: http://nhrc.nic.in/
