New Delhi October 03, 2008 The National Human Rights Commission has asked the Government of Tamil Nadu to pay a compensation of three lakh rupees instead of one lakh to the next of kin of the deceased, Murugesan who died due to police excess in the firing on August 6, 2002. While appreciating the State government’s decision to give one lakh rupees compensation and to recover the amount from the erring police officials, the Commission felt that this amount is inadequate. 22 year old, Murugesan, who was alleged to have stolen articles including a pistol, was remanded to police custody on August 6, 2002. During the course of interrogation in the alleged cross firing, he sustained bullet injury leading to his death. The Magisterial Inquiry found the police version incredible. Taking into consideration the conclusion of Magisterial Inquiry, the Commission found that there was a flagrant violation of human right in the matter. source: http://nhrc.nic.in/
