SHILLONG, Dec 25: Christmas was celebrated with religious fervour and gaiety throughout the State today. The celebrations started with the midnight mass and services in the churches of the different Christian denominations. From the midnight to the day services, the birth of Jesus Christ and his teachings on love and peace were the main thrust of the sermons delivered by the priest.
Besides the joy of celebrating Christmas, the Christian faithful used the day as an occasion of togetherness. Most of the Shillongites working in different parts of the country are in the city spending time with their families on Christmas.
“Christmas is the best occasion when one can be with one’s entire family, loved ones”, said Pyntngen Kharsohnoh, an employee at a multi-national company in Bangalore.
Milian Thangmaw, an air hostess at a private airlines company, said Christmas celebrations would be meaningless without being with her family.
Apart from the Christmas services in all the churches that started late last night, people in their best attires visited their firends and relatives sharing the spirit of Christmas. Community feasts were also organised in places outside the periphery of Shillong city. THE SENTINEL
