A new era in Asomiya literature

JORHAT, Oct 14: The Asomiya Jatiya Abhidhan, a newly composed Asomiya dictionary will be published on January 1, 2010. The dictionary is being prepared by a project titled Asomiya Jatiya Abhidhan Prakalpa, Akhoror Ghor-Akhora Ghor, situated in Malou Ali, Jorhat. An editorial board is composing the elite creation of the Asomiya literature with Dr Madan Mohan Sarma, head of the department, English and Foreign language, Tezpur University as president and Dr Debabrat Sarma, HoD of English, Jorhat College as editor-in-chief.

It was way back in January 1, 2000, the foundation day of Jorhat Jatiya Vidyalaya, Asomiya Jatiya Abhidhan Prakalpa declared about their plan to publish an Asomiya Nation wide dictionary and during the last one decade, the preparations were going on. The editorial board of the dictionary claimed that, more than one-third people of Asom speak Asomiya as their mother tongue and there are more than two lakh words in Asomiya language. They however said that, the ceiling word of the language included in the Asomiya dictionaries published till date is 50,000 and the newly composed dictionary will bring out as many as two lakh words comprising the secondary dialects like Gualporia, Kamrupi, Dorongi, Sar areas’ language and tea garden language (Sadri). The dictionary also included the words of the ethnic groups, words uses in Bhaona and Borgeets, the words of Brajawali language, words of the religious classics, words of modern science and technology, computer, mobile, e-mail, etc. The dictionary will publish in four parts comprising more than 1,000 pages in each part. A website www.assamesedictionary.org and a sophisticated software has also primed by two USA resident Asomiya brothers– Indrakanta Dutta and Rajib Dutta respectively in this regard.

It may be mentioned here that, the Asom Jatiya Siksha Samanay Parishad organized a workshop on the Asomiya Jatiya Abhidhan at Jorhat JB College on July 7, 2002 where the research thesis of Dr Dilip Kumar Dutta, Professor, Road Iraland University, USA, Dr Kabindranath Phukan, Professor, Dibrugarh University, Dr Madan Mohan Sarma, Professor, Tezpur University, Dr Bhimkanta Borua, Professor, Dibrugarh University, Dr Benu Gogoi, Professor, JB College, Jorhat, and Dr Debabrat Sarma of Jorhat College were discussed and released the collection of thesis titled Jatiya Abhidhan Prasanga. Later, with the help of this collection, the work of the proposed dictionary was promoted and concludes with this unique creation. THE SENTINEL
