GUWAHATI, Oct 3: The ruling Congress party, AUDF and the AGP are all set for the forthcoming bi-election in Dhekiajuli and Dhakhin Salmara constituencies. While the election dates are yet to be announced, the political parties barring the BJP are leaving no stone unturned to emerge victorious in the respective constituencies.
The Asom unit of BJP is more focused on internal party elections to be held sometime before December. Sources informed that the party is working towards inducting new members and aims to achieve a target of five lakh new members on or before October 10. As per schedule set by the party, the ward and panchayat-level committees will be formed between November 1-10, mandal committees between November 11-20 and district committees between November 21-30 respectively.
The following candidates are in fray for the post of State party president: BJP General Secretary Nakul Barua, Vice President Palit Bora, youth leader Siddhartha Bhattacharjee, MP Bijoya Chakravorty, Nagaon MP Rajen Gohain, ex-MP Narayan Borkotoki and MLA Ranjit Dutta. The Central leadership of the party has entrusted responsibility to MLA Parimal Shukrabaidya of Dholai for the smooth conduct of party polls.
Meanwhile, according to the party constitution, present State BJP president Ramen Deka is not eligible for a second term.
After facing defeat in the MP election, Assembly election and the recent civic polls, the national leaders of the BJP are laying stress on strengthening the party foundation. The national committee of the BJP is in favour of a youth leader for the State party presidentship. But the chances are unlikely as senior party leaders seem to be more influential.
At a time when the ruling Congress party is laying stress on inducting young leaders, the BJP seems to be obsessed with its senior leaders. THE SENTINEL
