Jorhat Durga Puja
JORHAT, Sept 15: In spite of high prices of essential commodities people are queuing to buy puja clothes from two shopping malls here.
Shops like Sardars, Genesis, Fort Knox, Karnanys, Guru Nanak and others are in a busy mode. The Sardar owner said that sale was medium and was likely to pick up after Mahalaya, which falls on September 18.
The Karnany manager, however, said that sales were “alright,” while Genesis and Fort Knox were being “visited by those who had received puja bonus and the rich.”
On the other hand, Max Mart and Vishal were thronged by customers to pick up something trendy but at an affordable price.
Kanchan Neog of Na-Ali said this year her budget has been spoiled by the high prices of essential commodities. “Every puja I buy a couple of frocks for my daughter and at least three sarees for myself. This year, I have cut down and bought only one saree for myself and two frocks for my daughter,” she said.
Speaking in the same vein, Jun Phukan of Choladhora said that usually she bought some branded clothes for her family but this time she has restricted herself to be contented with hanger which are cheaper. “I did my shopping early this time so that I could get a better selection at the malls,” she said.
Ranjan Roy has also had to cut costs this season. “Instead of buying clothes or some other item for each and every member of the extended family, I have bought clothes for only my family,” he said. Ranjan is the only bread earner in his family.” For Alpana Saikia puja clothes for her family this year came from the sales offered in shops just prior to the new stocks being brought in.
“Although long frocks, churidars and leggings are in the trend this season for girls and cargo pants out, I got a salwar suit for my daughter and a couple of cargo pants for my son at a bargained price in a sale,” she said. THE SENTINEL
