Sarbhog railway station lying abandoned

BARPETA, Sept 13: The people of Sarbhog area in Barpeta district have expressed their dissatisfaction over the Government’s indifference on the deplorable condition of the Sarbhog railway station of greater Barnagar area of Barpeta district.

Sarbhog Railway station was made during the time of British rule. At present, more than 1000-bigha land of the station lie abandoned. Moreover, a vast portion of this station land have been illegally encroached by the people of the neighbouring areas. The railway offices were tactfully shifted from Sarbhog and established at such places, where there in no land for the railways department. The PWI and IWI offices that were stationed at the Sarbhog railway station were also shifted. On the other hand, a few section of people are in favour of shifting the railway station hospital to Barpeta town.

A majority of people in Sarbhog have demanded the authorities concerned to relocate the offices at Sarbhog, construct the railway platform anew with adequate facilities for passengers, construction of the railway station overbridge etc. The people have also demanded a special stop at the Sarbhog station for long-distance trains such as 2505/06 NE Express, 5609/10 Avadh Assam, 5658/57 Kanchanjangha, 5629/30 Chennai Express, 5651/52 Lohit Express, 5632/31 Bikanir Express, 202/01 Puja Express, 2513/14 Arnakulum Express, 2509/10 Bengaluru Express, 5648/81 Dadar Express etc.

As a matter of fact, more than 10,000 people of greater Barnagar area of Sarbhog in Barpeta have been working in the Army in various places across the country. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult for commuters of this area in the absence of a stoppage at the Sarbhog station for long-distance trains.

The people have urged Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee and other authorities concerned to improve the condition of the railway station and setup a medical college at Sarbhog. President of Barnagar Unnayan Sammittee and Barnagar Press Club Sankar Das said the residents of Sarbhog and members of various organizations are slated to meet the Railways Minister at the earliest and put forth their suggestions and demands.
