GUWAHATI, Sept 19: The war of words between Purvanchaliya Loka Parishad (PLP) general secretary Rajkumar Baishya and MP Biswajit Daimary continues. At a press conference today in Guwahati, Baishya refuted Daimary’s allegation that his comments would flare communal violence in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) area.
Early this month in an interview to a local television channel, Baishya had raised objections to imposition of new taxes in the BTC area on the grounds that such a move would create a rift between the Bodo and non-Bodo communities living in the area. This rift could also result in communal tension in the area.
MP Biswajit Daimary took strong objection to this comment. In the draft constitution of the Sukhai Managing Board, whose chief advisor is Daimary, it is mentioned that PLP’s Rajkumar Baishya was trying to incite communal violence in the BTC area with his comments.
At the press conference today Baishya said,“This is just an attempt to malign my image. PLP was formed in 1977 to fight against communal forces and in these 32 years this organization has always worked within a secular framework. Such an allegation is baseless. I was only trying to warn Daimary that the move of imposing new taxes would create friction between Bodos and non-Bodos. My comment has been misinterpreted. Daimary should withdraw his statement publicly,” said Baishya. THE SENTINEL
