How safe is Guwahati?

GUWAHATI, Sept 19: A fear psychosis has crept into the minds of the people of Guwahati. There is a general feeling of insecurity among them. Quite natural as the crime graph of the city has shot up with increasing number of robbery cases being reported everyday. People are scared to leave their houses even during the day.

A gang of dacoits robbed Amulya Phukan’s house at Hengrabari Forest Gate in the wee hours of the morning today. The dacoits reportedly looted valuables and assaulted the inmates of the house. The injured include Amulya Phukan, his wife Garima Phukan and their daughter. Hearing their cries when their neighbour Manikanta Gogoi and his wife Leela Gogoi came to help them, the dacoits assaulted them too.

Following the incident SSP Pradip Chandra Saloi visited the house to take stock of the situation. According to police sources, he has ordered Dispur police to arrest the culprits soon. Search for the dacoits is on, say sources.

Almost every night the city witnesses a robbery. The nature of the crime justifies the panic that has gripped Guwahatians. The question doing the rounds is – how safe is the city? THE SENTINEL
