SHILLONG, Sept 12: Regarded as one of the backward districts in Meghalaya, Nongstoin, the district headquarters of West Khasi Hills, is set to receive a face-lift with the town planning committee coming up with a comprehensive guideline for a developed town.
The committee has decided to replace the old horse carts that have been existing since the British era with auto trucks and rickshaws by October 28. Besides this, the committee has directed regulation of footpaths and pavements, houses, service centres and workshops.
Informing this, secretary of the committee DM Wahlang said that replacement of the horse carts will be made in collaboration with the State Bank of India. He said in regard to cleaning up of pavements and footpaths, the committee has decided not to allow trade along the streets within the town area from September 15. For this, the Syiem of Nongstoin and headmen of New Nongstoin and Upper New Nongstoin have been authorized to serve notices to all street vendors, Wahlang added.
Further, the committee has also directed service centres to fence their premises by September 25. Shop owners have also been directed to renew their No Objection Certificates (NOC) with the concerned local durbars as well as to obtain NOC from the town committee.
The committee has also laid down a comprehensive guideline for all house owners along Nanbah riverside to construct toilets and septic tanks within their own compounds. In this regard, Wahlang said, the committee has decided that construction of toilets must be completed by September 25, and local durbars have been authorized to initiate steps to direct the house owners to construct toilets within the stipulated time. A new plan to regulate the construction, extension as well as renovation of new houses was also made through which all house owners should have to obtain NOC from the local durbar before any new construction, Wahlang added.
