SHILLONG, Sept 12: To prove that people without eyesight equally know about the world they are living in, ‘Café in the dark’ is the right place for every Shillongite to know how the blinds know the components of the planet that we are living in. Café in the dark is a place where the blinds will display over a cup of tea and snacks on how the midst of darkness does not deter the blinds to know the world as much as everyone knows.
Conceptualized by a blind Japanese student, Yoshime Horiyushi, a graduate of the International Institute of Social Entrepreneurship, Trivandrum, the ‘café in the dark’ will be held in Shillong on September 19. Horiyushi conceptualized the idea after coming across the famous academic deliberation in Europe known as ‘Dialogue in the dark’. Currently doing her internship with Jyoti Sroat School for the blinds in Shillong, Horiyushi, along with another visually impaired student from China known as Kyila, wanted to drive home that blindness does not devoid a visually impaired person from using four of the five senses. The blinds possessed these attributes and our physical display to the people with vision will prove that we are no lesser being.
The café will be in a shift of 20 minutes and Horuyushi said her exhibits will go along with relishing food. “The professional waiters and waitress will guide the visitors to a maze of tables, provide them with a cup of steaming tea and home made sweets,” stated Horuyushi.
“We taste, feel, hear and touch the same way as you do”, stated Horuyushi, adding, “this will make you many realize that the blinds’ perception about the world is not different from what the normal people see”.
The café in the dark will be equipped with art pictures, sounds that could make the people with an eye sight knows that none is handicapped in knowing the world. Horuyoshi said, “We learn, read and understand everything because of the support from those people who empathize us.” The café in the dark conceptualized by Horuyushi will be supported by Jyoti Sroat School. THE SENTINEL
