No rollback of decision on uranium mining: Lapang

SHILLONG, Sept 2: Meghalaya Chief Minister DD Lapang said his government will not review the decision of leasing out 422 hectares of land of the State to Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) for uranium mining. A day after the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) served a 15-day deadline for the government to revoke the decision, Lapang told newsmen today, “The issue was raised in the Cabinet, and the Cabinet resolved to ahead with the decision”.

“We are not going to review our decision,” Lapang said. He, however, said the door is open for discussion with any party. The stand of the government came a day after the KSU threatened to take its own course if the government goes ahead with the permission to UCIL to carry out pre-developmental programmes in the uranium mining site in Phud kylleng-Nongbahjynrin and Mawt-habah areas in West Khasi Hills district.
