Jorhat Durga Puja

JORHAT, Sep 23: With only one day left for the Durga Puja festivities to start, artisans and decorators are putting finishing touches to idols and mandaps here.

The JPR Puja pandal is out to touch the hearts with an enactment of the helicopter crash and death of YS Rajashekhar Reddy. The JPR Puja also plans to show the spread and prevention of swine flu. To the query that death and disease was at odds with the spirit of joy which prevailed during the pujas, an official of the JPR Puja committee said that, the committee purported to show the two most important issues which had touched the Nation this year.

Citing the example of the Prudential Cup win by India, the official said that in previous years as well JPR had focused its attention on important issues which had swayed the Nation. The JPR Puja mandap also will replicate a rural look being completely made of straw, bamboo and wood.
The Rupahi Ali Puja mandap, on the other hand, will concentrate on interior decor and has shunned ostentatious display in consonance with a slow economic growth and austerity measures being adopted not only by our politicians in power but in households as well.

The Lakshmi Union Puja mandap and Station Road Puja will go with Durga’s traditional look as in previous years.
Likewise the Choladhora, Theatre Hall, Tarajan Puja Mandir, Sabaibandha, Kenduguri, Marwari Thakurbari, etc., will keep the spirit of Durga Puja alive with the performance of rites and rituals as well as singing of devotional hymns and the evening and morning aratis.

While the district administration proposes using sniffer dogs and CCTV cameras to provide security, the traffic police has made elaborate arrangements to keep the flow of vehicles free of jams. The Gar-Ali will be off limits to all vehicles from 12 in the afternoon till 12 at night on all four puja days. The puja committees have been asked to complete immersion of the idols by evening. Vehicles will also not be allowed to ply on the JB Road from Shankar Cinema Hall to AT Road as well as from the KB Road Police Point to AT Road via Gar-Ali. No vehicle will be allowed to ply from near Lachit Bazar to Bata Point on the AT Road Old and New Balibat to Gar-Ali will also be off limits to vehicles on the four puja days at the same hour. Buses plying from Sivasagar cannot enter the town and will have take a detour on the Bypass and stop at the new bus stand.
There will be more than 80 pujas in the district and 58 in the town area. THE SENTINEL
