Titabor madrassa under scanner

GUWAHATI/ JORHAT, Aug 24: Expressing its displeasure over the failure of the government to prevent the madrassas in the State from being used by foreign nationals and Islamic fundamentalists for anti-India activities, the Northeast front of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad today demanded that the government launch a vigorous operation to thwart such activities.

The VHP leaders were addressing the press in Guwahati today in the wake of widespread allegations that the Madrassa-e-Islamia, located at Melamati area under Titabor subdivision of Jorhat district, is being used by Islamic fundamentalists from Bangladesh for spreading terror in the State. Incidentally, Titabor happens to be the home district of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

As many as 27 students of the said madrassa, who have been suspected to be Bangladeshis, are yet to provide documents in support of their Indian citizenship to the Border branch of the Assam Police. Police sources said that the students of the madrassa had been asked to submit evidence of their Indian citizenship. Out of the 92 students in the madrassa, only 65 have managed to prove their Indian citizenship till now, the sources said.

The police has already filed an FIR against a student of the madrassa at the Golaghat district Foreigner’s Tribunal for submitting fake citizenship documents. The suspected foreigner had introduced himself as a permanent resident of Sarupathar area of Golaghat district.

When contacted, Jorhat SP Deepak Choudhary said that the students of the madrassa were asked to provide their citizenship documents by the first week of the current month. He said, “The required official processes are going on and the results would be disclosed shortly.”

Lambasting the failure of the government, VHP’s NE front president Jyotish Chandra Pathak said, “We have been repeatedly telling the government that Islamic fundamentalists are using madrassas to spread terror in the country. But the government has been maintaining a surprising silence. It has not even made a clear statement in this regard.” He demanded the immediate arrest of the managing authorities of the madrassa and also strong legal action against the erring students and their parents.

The said madrassa located in Titabor is not new to controversy. The Asom Jatiyatibadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) and other organizations have long been alleging the existence of fundamentalist and jehadi elements inside the madrassa. The present verification drive of the district administration is a result of a number of protest programmes demanding the closure of the madrassa. THE SENTINEL
