Rahul to visit Guwahati for AAKS promotion

GUWAHATI, July 11: All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Rahul Gandhi is arriving in Guwahati on July 18 for an awareness drive on the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) and the Right to Information (RTI) Act with the help of the Aam Aadmi Ka Sipahi (AAKS) programme, a concept developed by Gandhi himself and put to practice a year back.

Talking to newsmen in Guwahati today, Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) president Pijush Hazarika said: "Due to good response to the AAKS programme in Asom, the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has taken Asom as a pilot project in the country, and as a result of which a State-level convention will be held in Sarusajai Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Guwahati from July 18 to 20 when AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi, AICC’s Youth Congress in-charge Jitender Singh and IYC president Ashok Tanwar will address the gathering."

Hazarika said as many as ten districts of the State — Dhubri, Goalpara, Barpeta, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia and Cachar — have been brought under the AAKS programme last year, and the remaining 17 districts will be brought under the programme after the State-level convention. Asom has altogether 6,552 AAKS sipahis and the target is to enrol about 14,000 such sipahis. SOURCE: THE SENTINEL
