Talking to newsmen in Guwahati today, Bhatta said without any instruction from the SP, the PSO cannot be so desperate to chase the truck and fire as many as 25-30 rounds of bullet to kill its driver and the handyman. "This is not the first incident of atrocities and harassment of police on common people in the State. Whenever cases are filed against the harassment of labourers by the police, the labourers never get justice and this leads to rise in incidents of harassment by the police."
Asom unit joint secretary of All India Road Transport Workers’ Federation Biren Sarma said: "The police has violated human rights, and the culprits should be brought to book. This is not the first such incident. We have seen the brutality of the State police force in their action against the LIC employees in Jorhat recently."
Sarma said the State Government should come clear on its policy on social security of labourers. "In other States there are schemes for social security of labourers, but in Asom the labourers have no such schemes. Though Asom has about 1.5 lakh motor workers, but there is no welfare scheme for them." He said the July 13 12-hour chakka bandh was called demanding compensation to the next of kin of the two truckers who were killed by the police. SOURCE: THE SENTINEL
