AGARTALA, July 10 – The Centre has sanctioned Rs 1,000 crore for massive road expansion in the State under the national flagship programme – PMGSY.
In the first phase, a total of 2,500 km road will be constructed during the current financial year (2009-2010), said Chief Engineer of PWD Sunil Bhowmik here today.
Under the plan, habitats having population of 1,000 plus will be covered in the first phase of PMGSY. The number of such habitats stands at 750. Under the first phase, the Centre has also allocated Rs 200 crore for maintenance of 1,067 roads.
In the second phase, the Centre is mulling to cover habitats having 250 plus population especially for the North East and hilly States of the country. The number of such habitats in the State is 2,253.
“We have already identified such habitats and will be able to send the list whenever the Centre gives its nod, he said.
Bhowmik said that the State Government has also identified 3,936 villaged having less than 250 population. Though no sanction has been made to connect such habitats, around 2,349 such uncovered villages will be connected when first phase of works get completed.
As part of ongoing connectivity development work, all the Gram Panchayats will be connected by all-weather road within the next three years. The number of SPT bridges has been reduced to 400 from 1,248 in 1998. All the SPT bridges will be replaced by pucca bridges within the next three years, he added. SOURCE: ASSAM TRIBUNE
