Manipur body launches black badge campaign

IMPHAL, July 10 – Demanding decentralisation of power to the hill districts by holding early elections to the autonomous district councils in Assam to enhance grassroot democracy in the State, the Indigenous Democratic Front (IDF) launched its first phase of agitation across five hill districts today.

Posters displayed and pasted on roads and streets of towns in hill districts read, ‘Give us back what is Constitutionally ours’, ‘devaluate power at the grassroot’, ‘we want local self-governance’, etc.

The step has been taken up to press the State Government for holding early elections to the district councils, which has not been held for the last 20 years.

The IDF said that its move is purely to evolve a democratic system of self-governance based on indigenous democracy which will benefit the indigenous people of Manipur. SOURCE: ASSAM TRIBUNE
