Hectic campaigning in Barpeta HPC, Barpeta Lok Sabha Election

Barpeta Lok Sabha Election
Correspondent
PATACHARKUCHI, April 8 – As the Lok Sabha elections draw near, various parties have intensified their campaign by holding meetings in every nook and corner of the prestigious Barpeta constituency. The Congress is in with a chance of securing its third consecutive win this time in Barpeta HPC. On the two earlier occasions, UMF turned Congress candidate AF Golam Osmani captured the seat with huge margins.

He won for the first time in the constituency as a United Minority Front Candidate. Altogether he won thrice. But this time in his absence Congress has nominated Ismail Hussain, ex-minister and three times winner of Barpeta Assembly constituency. In the last Assembly election he was defeated by AGP candidate Gunin Das.

Barpeta HPC comprises ten Assembly contituencies i.e. Dharmapur of Nalbari district, Patacharkuchi, Sarukshetri, Barpeta, Jania, Baghbar, Chenga of Barpeta district, and Bongaigaon, Uttarabhayapuri and Dakshin Abhayapuri of Bongaigaon district. Interestingly in the last Assembly election of the State, five seats were captured by AGP candidates and four by Congress and one by one Independent candidate who is actually a Congressman Dr Tara Prasad Das, the ex-chairman of Assam Public Service Commission. He later extended his support to Congress. At present both the parties are matched in terms of the major Assembly seats they hold.

On the other hand, the two AGP stalwarts Chandra Mohan Patowary and Phani Bhushan Choudhury represent two Assembly segments under Barpeta HPC and winning the seat has become a prestige issue for the party. In the last Lok Sabha election AF Golam Osmani received 2,66,972 votes i.e. 35% of total votes and defeated his nearest rival of the AGP Kumar Dipak Das with a huge margin of 68,125 votes. Ranjit Ihakuria of BJP got 1,1105 votes, i.e. 14.56% of total votes. Kumar Dipak Das got 1,98,847 (26.07%) while Dr Tara Prasad Das (Ind) got 72,583 (9.52%) and UMFA candidate Abdus Samad Ahmad got 53072 (6.96%) votes as leading parties.

In the coming elections, the equation will be totally changed in Barpeta HPC because AGP and BJP have joined hands in the constituency. The constituency has considerable number of minority people whose votes will definitely be split between the Congress, UMFA and AUDF. The Badarudin Ajmal led party proved its existence in the constituency in the last Panchayat and Assembly election of the State. The common people feel that AUDF may play a vital and decisive role this time in the constituency. Osmani wanted the ticket for his son for the seat but his hopes were dashed by the Congress by providing ticket to Ismail Hussain. He may have played a dissident’s role, this time but he died recently. The role of his supporters will also be significant in the ensuing poll.

Meanwhile, the CPM is also hopeful of winning the seat. Their candidate is Durge Deka as a candidate. CPM leader Manoranjan Talukdar in a campaign meeting disclosed confidently that due to the failure of Congress-led UPA and BJP-led NDA at the Centre, a third front without Congress and BJP will form the government at the Centre and people will exercise their franchise in favour of the CPM candidate. Abdus Samad Ahmad is the AUDF candidate. An advocate by profession and secretary of the party, he is campaigning with a new zeal.

The common people of the constituency feel that there will be a keen contest between the Congress candidate and the AGP-BJP alliance and AUDF.

The AGP candidate Bhupen Roy, Congress candidate Ismail Hussain, CPI(M) candidate Durge Deka have all geared up their campaign in the constituency.

Altogether 12,37,669 voters will decide the fate of the contesting candidates. Out of the total voters, 5,81,782 are female and 6,55,887 are male. ASSAM TRIBUNE
