AGARTALA, April 8 – The Election Commission has asked the Ministry of Defence to provide two choppers for Tripura for air surveillance during the parliamentary elections.
Talking to media here today, Addl CEO Dilip Acharjee said that the two IAF choppers would be meant for only air surveillance and the duo would be kept ready for use from April 20 to 24. However, the Commission will not bear expenditure for this purpose.
Sources said, the Indian Air Force (IAF) would provide two helicopters. An amount of Rs 36,000 will be charged for detention of helicopter each day. The cost of flying will be around Rs 55,000 per hour apart from food and lodging for crews.
“The State Government will have to bear full expenditure for using the helicopters”, he said adding that the helicopters would not be used for ferrying polling personnel.
The Commission has taken the move to ensure free and fair elections in the tribal dominated areas. Of the total 3,008 polling stations in the two parliamentary seats, around 5-7 per cent of the booths have been identified as sensitive and hyper-sensitive.
However, the final assessment will be made after consultation with the EC appointed Observers. The security has been beefed up all over the State to ensure free and fair elections. As of now, more than 40,000 security personnel are deployed in the State.
On the number of counting halls, Acharjee said that the Commission has accepted the State poll panel’s proposal to have 17 counting halls across the State.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission held a meeting of CEOs from all Northeastern States to review the election homework on Tuesday.
Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sanjeev Ranjan along with Addl DGP C Balasubramanium attended the meeting on behalf of the State Government. In the meeting, the CEO briefed the Commission about the steps taken for holding the parliamentary elections smoothly. ASSAM TRIBUNE
