NEW DELHI, April 7: China, which lays claim over Arunachal Pradesh, has objected to the recent visit of President Pratibha Patil to the State but India has rejected the Chinese comments as unwarranted.
Patil, on her first visit to the north-eastern State, travelled to the border region, Tawang, besides the State’s capital Itanagar on April 2. The visit irked China which made known its displeasure to India, sources said.
New Delhi, on its part, has conveyed to Beijing that its objection was unwarranted as Arunachal Pradesh is an integral part of India and its leaders are entitled to visit it.
During her visit, Patil termed Arunachal Pradesh as the “land of the rising sun” and added that it had “never been far from the consciousness of the nation”.
When asked to comment on the Patil’s visit to Arunachal Pradesh, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Qin Gang had said Beijing’s position on the border issue is “clear-cut” that the two countries should make “joint efforts to carry out all the consensus reached by leaders of the two countries with a view to ensuring healthy and stable development of bilateral relations”.
