Assam Lok Sabha Election
GUWAHATI, April 7: What with the elections drawing near, campaigning among the various political parties in the State is hotting up. It appears that parties like the Congress, AGP-BJP alliance and the NCP are hogging the limelight in so far as electioneering in the Guwahati constituency is concerned.
Even Robin Bordoloi is not leaving things to chance, he has been of late vociferously appealing to voters to cast their votes in his favour, citing several developmental projects in the pipeline which he intends to take up once he is elected, Bordoloi is also using the name of his illustrious father, Gopinath Bordoloi to gain political mileage. The public, however, is taking all his claims with a pinch of salt.
However, it must be admitted that Congress leaders including Himanta Biswa Sarma, Pankaj Bora and former Youth Congress president Rekibuddin Ali are leaving no stone unturned to keep Bordoloi’s chances of winning the Guwahati LS seat alive and the said leaders have also gone to the extent of boasting that even this time round Congress will come out victorious.
The voting public however thinks otherwise and are rather keen on backing AUDF’s Sonabor Ali, particularly in the minority areas of the said constituency.
Meanwhile, NCP candidate for the Guwahati seat, Akshay Rajkhowa has not been able to make much of an impact in the elections barring a few areas in the city.
On the other hand, BJP candidate Bijoya Chakravarty has launched a trailblazing election campaign holding as many as 10-15 public meetings in a day including in areas under the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, which, it may be recalled, had earlier made the announcement that it would not allow any political party to hold meetings in the areas under it.
Rubbishing Congress claims to victory at the forthcoming elections, Bijoya Chakravarty has said that the only way by which the Congress can hope to win is through resorting to unfair means. Calling Congress candidate Robin Bordoloi an unworthy son of a worthy father, Bijoya has said that Bordoloi’s candidature is a matter of no consequence to her as he hardly posed any threat in so far as her political career is concerned
The BJP candidate added that the Congress has totally failed to live up to the people’s expectation and has indeed cut a sorry figure in providing security to the people of Guwahati. She has further alleged that the tall claims made by the Congress regarding the implementation of various developmental projects is merely a figment of the imagination and restricted to newspaper advertisements only.
It appears that the odds are heavily stacked in BJP candidate Bijoya Chakravarty’s favour this time round. Interestingly, even AGP leaders such as Jyoti Prasad Das, Ramendra Narayan Kalita, Nurul Hussain and Dr Kamala Kalita who were initially against her candidature, particularly at the time when the seat sharing process was not finalized, are now cheering for her in what may be called a dramatic volte face.
Fortune, they say, favours the brave. According to sources, the proposed visit of BJP leader and Chief Minister of Gujarat Narendra Modi to Guwahati has given a huge boost to party’s morale. It has been announced that Modi will campaign for the BJP in several places in the State including Guwahati.
BJP, it appears, has indeed stolen a march over the other political parties in the State in so far as launching election campaigns are concerned. THE SENTINEL
