Staff Reporter
GUWAHATI, April 8 – A high level Central delegation headed by the Union Cabinet Secretary today reviewed the law-and-order situation in the State in view of the ensuing Lok Sabha polls in a meeting with the senior officers of the State Government, Police, Army and other security forces involved in counter-insurgency operations in Assam. Official sources said that the central team also assessed the requirement of forces in the State to ensure violencefree polls. The meeting assumed significance in view of the sudden deterioration of the law-and-order situation following a series of blasts in different parts of the State. It may be mentioned here that the State Government has requested the Centre to provide 120 companies of additional forces to ensure violence-free polls, but the Centre is yet to take a decision in this regard.

The central team, which arrived in the region yesterday, also reviewed the security scene in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh during the visit.

Centre is likely to deploy addtional forces in the State. The review meeting also decided to step up security deployment in select places. ASSAM TRIBUNE
