HOWRAGHAT, April 8 – The All Tea Tribe Students’ Association (ATTSA), Karbi Anglong district unit on Tuesday formally announced support to the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) in Karbi Anglong and both have decided to fight jointly in the forthcoming Lok Sabha poll against the Congress.

This development has created rumblings within the Congress. In fact it is an inexplicable situation for the Congress in Karbi Anglong. The tea tribe community people were loyal supporters of the Congress now suddenly on the eve of the Lok Sabha polls, a vast rift has occurred between the Congress and the All Tea Tribe Students’ Association (ATTSA) in Karbi Anglong.

Expressing resentment over the betrayal by the Congress on the grievances of the tea garden community, student leaders comprising Dhananjay Kurmi and Joyprakash Guwala, president and general secretary, ATTSA, Karbi Anglong district unit told reporters on Tuesday that the Congress has completely failed to keep their commitments and no single assurance given the party was fulfilled in practice.

Speaking about their strategy, the student body asserted that their fight will continue till the government fulfills their demands. Replying to a question on the basis of their support to the ASDC, the Tea tribe student leaders said that as per resolutions taken by the tea tribe intellectuals they have already given three conditions to the ASDC which have been agreed to by the leader. These are –fulfillment of the demand of ST status for tea gardens in Karbi Anglong, withdrawal of the new land policy that was implemented by the Congress-led KAAC body and fund for the development of tea garden community from MP development fund.

After the declaration of support to the ASDC the student body has started anti Congress campaign. But whether the ASDC would be able to keep its commitment if they win only time will tell. ASSAM TRIBUNE
