Barpeta Lok Sabha Election
CORRESPONDENT
KALGACHIA, April 8 – Along with other constituencies in the State, in 6 No Barpeta LS seat different political parties particularly Congress, AGP-BJP alliance, AUDF and CPM have accelerated their election campaign by holding public meetings, party meetings and putting up banners and festoons at different places and meeting the common people.
On the other hand, as the date of the polls draws near, the political scenario or position of different parties in this constituency is becoming clear. Winning Barpeta seat now has become a prestigious matter for both Congress and AGP. The Congress won this seat for the last two terms and till date late Osmani was a Congress MP. It is important also for the AGP as the party president and executive president Chandra Mohan Patowary and Phanibhushan Chowdhury respectively are both voters of this constituency.
However, the people feel that it matters little whether the Congress, AGP or any other party wins this seat, but it matters much that being itself prestigious, represented by ex-president of India late Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, most of the serious problems of Barpeta constituency like massive erosion caused by the Brahmaputra, Beki, Bhelengi, Agia and Manas particularly in Jania, Baghbar and Chenga LACs, migrant issue, security of Indian minorities, rising unemployment, construction of State Road from North Salmara to Amingaon, shortage of teachers in rural schools have remained unsolved. To meet these challenges candidates of different parties have once again plunged into the electioneering battle.
Admitting the allegation that sitting Congress MP late Golam Osmani, being an outsider from Barak Valley did not put much emphasis on the development of Barpeta constituency, this time the party has nominated ex-MLA of Barpeta LAC and ex-Minister, Ismail Hussain as its candidate on the reasoning that during his tenure as an MLA or Minister there was not a single charge of corruption or graft of public fund against him. To draw public support for their candidate high profile Congress leaders like Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and even APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita have already started hectic campaigns attending public meeting organised by local Congress MLAs and grassroots workers particularly in rural areas.
The Congress leaders believe that the voters especially minority communities will by no means vote for AGP’s Bhupen Roy in Barpeta as that will mean voting for L K Advani, the Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP. On the other hand, Forest and Tourism Minister Rockybul Hussain in a meeting held recently at Jania’s Kamarpara alleged that AUDF’s nominee Abdus Samad Ahmed stands every election not to win but to get financially benefited. Likewise, APCC president Bhubaneswar Kalita while addressing a crowded Congress meeting at Balagaon remarked that in the forthcoming election all sections of people will support Congress in the State considering its ongoing developmental works especially in health, communication and education sectors.
On the other hand, AGP also is not lagging behind in wooing the voters. Its leaders like Phanibhushan Chowdhury, Barpeta MLA Gunin Das and AGP-BJP nominee Bhupen Roy are attending election meetings all over the constituency. Feeling secure with the help of alliance with BJP the AGP leaders hope that this time the voters will totally discard Congress as during the last two tenures of Congress its MP utterly failed not only to do any significant work in the constituency but also opened a commission system share market for distribution of schemes under MPLAD fund.
Again, CPM which under Uddhav Barman once won Barpeta LS seat before Osmani this time has placed a new face Durge Deka, secretary Barpeta district committee of CPM. While criss-crossing the constituency CPM leaders like Hemen Das, Uddhav Barman, Mono Talukdar and Karim Bhuyan actively canvassing support for Durge Deka. The leftist leaders have confidence that all sections of people will support their party candidate in Barpeta LS seat on the basis of their relentless crusade against the unbridled corruption of Congress rule and its capitalistic and anti-people policies, and on the basis of the party’s secularism and struggle for the upliftment of the poor and under-privileged.
Likewise, AUDF nominee Abdus Samad and his supporters argue that this time voters from all communities across the constituency will support him as the people of this constituency have got fed up with the misrule of Congress and their false commitments.
In a minority-dominated seat like Barpeta if AUDF’s Samad can manage to get around one lakh votes who in the last election got only 53072 votes much less than independent Tara Das, it may be a huge dent in the Congress votes that would have gone in favour of Congress in the absence of Samad. On the other hand, if CPM’s Durge Deka, who has reportedly a strong base in Chenga, Dharmapur, Sarukshetri and Patacharkuchi LACs somehow manages to draw one lakh or a little more votes it may be a cause of threat to AGP-BJP’s Bhupen Roy.
Notably the two parties jointly got a total of 309905 votes, that is only 42933 votes more than the Congress candidate Osmani who won the last election. It is speculated that if the voters, who earlier supported AGP’s Kr Dipak Das maintain distance from AGP for joining BJP, the benefit will go either to the Congress or CPM and consequently the battle would be very tough for Bhupen Roy. Under such circumstances it is sure that AUDF and CPM would play a vital role in winning of Barpeta seat either by the Congress or AGP-BJP. ASSAM TRIBUNE
