NHRC issues notice to different authorities on the fire incident at Shaheed Basti, Delhi: investigation team of the NHRC will look into the cause of fire
New Delhi June 18, 2008The Investigation Team of NHRC will look into the circumstances, which caused the outbreak of fire in J.J. Camp, Shaheed Basti, Lahori Gate, Delhi on June 14, 2008.The Commission's move came on a petition filed by Rashtriya Shoshit Parishad. The petition alleged that the staff of the Divisional Regional Manager (DRM), Northern Railway (NR), came with a police contingent to the J.J. Camp on the day of the incident and rained lathis on the inhabitants, set the jhuggies ablaze and razed the hutments to ground with a bulldozer.The petition said that the affected persons were still squatting at the spot. It further said that the action was inhuman and also violated the provisions of the National Capital Territory of Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Second Ordinance, 2007, which required that status quo should be maintained till Dec 31, 2008.The complaint also highlighted that those who occupied the locality prior to 1998 were entitled to an alternative residence according to the policy of the Urban Development Ministry. Following this, the Commission issued notice to DRM (NR), Delhi Police Commissioner, Secretary, Urban Development Ministry and Additional Commissioner Slum and J.J. Colony, to submit a report within two weeks.The Commission has also said that the concerned authorities should not evict the inhabitants of the JJ Colony, Shaheed Basti, without making appropriate rehabilitation arrangement. source: http://nhrc.nic.in/
