The term “Navratri” is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “nine nights.” It is during this period that sees the worship of the female goddess’ particularly Durga or Kali (Goddess of Power), Lakshmi (Goddess of wealth) and Sarsawati (Goddess of wisdom), and their various avatars. The tenth day culminates into Dussera – the day Ram emerged victorious over Ravana.

Rituals:
Arguably one of the biggest festivals in the state, Navratri or Durga Puja as it’s popularly know is widely celebrated with much pomp and splendour. It typically starts on the sixth day with the welcoming of Goddess Durga, and ends on the tenth day with her immersion at a nearby waterbody. Besides this, several pandals are decorated and erected in localities, and several cultural programs take place during the day. People offer sarees, flowers and fruits amongst others to Goddess Kali.
