Puja organisers queue up for temporary power connections

Pune, October 3 With Durga Puja just a few days away, nearly 3,000 Puja committees have got the approval for temporary power connections from CESC, indicating towards a growing awareness among Puja organisers to abide by the law and not indulge in electricity theft. “CESC has already processed more than 3,000 applications for temporary connections and a few more are under consideration. Last year, 3,040 pandals had applied for connections,” executive director of CESC D K Sen said.
Power consumption in pandals is estimated to be 3 million units this year. However, many power-consuming pandals have applied for lesser loads as compared to last year. The Maddox Square Puja committee, which had applied for a load of 340 kw, has reduced it to 316 kw this Puja. Similarly, the Ekdalia Evergreen Puja committee has applied for 160 Kw compared to its last year’s demand of 175 kw.
To deal with power disruptions during Pujas, CESC’s Loss Control Cell has decided to launch a special drive against pilferages and unauthorised connections. According to CESC officials, the company has formed 40 teams to check 1,500 pandals across the city.
Besides usual power supply provided by the West Bengal State Electricity Development Corporation, CESC has made special arrangements to procure 100 mw from Madhya Pradesh.
Although CESC has already tested the option of 20 kilovolt generators to provide power during service faults in some areas, the power supplying company is planning to standardise the practice.
“In some areas, we used to run temporary generators during service faults, but they were scattered trial runs. Now, we plan to standardise this practice,” Sen said. sourcE: http://www.expressindia.com
