Durga Puja festivities get under way

GUWAHATI, Oct 5 – With the auspicious ‘Mahashashthi’ celebrations today, the much-awaited five-day-long Durga Puja, symbolising the victory of good over evil, began here along with the rest of the country. The ‘Mahashashthi’ puja began today following customary rituals, which were performed in all the pandals across the city.

It is believed that Goddess Durga descends on earth today – the Mahashashthi-, accompanied by her children Ganesh, Kartik, Lakshmi and Saraswati, at the invocation and supplication of the devotees and stays for the next four days.

The days are Mahasaptami on Monday, Mahashtami on Tuesday, Mahanabami on Wednesday and Bijaya Dashami on Thursday, when the idol of Goddess Durga is immersed.

Official sources here informed that around 500 puja mandaps have been set up in and around the city.

Ranging from the modest to extravagant, a budget raging from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh is commonplace this Durga Puja.

Most of the puja committees, this year, have decided to spend lion’s share of the total budget on the idols. A host of the puja committees are also organising programme like quiz, antakshari and painting contests to woo pandal-hoppers.

Among these, the Chandmari Rajhua Puja Samiti is organising a host of programme including Naam recital competition along with other programmes for children. A blood donation camp would also be organised on the occasion.

The Sreenagar Durga Puja Celebration Committee has also lined up a host of programmes during next four days.

Some of the main attractions of this year would be witnessed at the pandals of Kalibari at Bamunimaidam, Silphukuri, Maligaon, Santipur, Latasil, Lakhi Mandir, Ganeshguri, Sreenagar, Tarun Nagar and Pandu among others.

Moreover, the district administration has also put in place all the necessary precautionary measures for smooth conducting of the festival.

The administration has also asked all the puja committees to allot volunteers for the smooth movement of the vehicular traffic, which is being seen as the biggest challenge for the administration.

Meanwhile, the City Police (traffic) has restricted the entry of heavy vehicles into the city and movement of slow moving vehicles like rickshaw has also been barred in most of the places, as directed in the draft prepared to combat the puja vehicular traffic.

“As it would not be possible for us to depute large number of police personnel in each and every pandal, we have asked the celebration committees to form their own team of volunteers to work in co-ordination with the city police,” a senior police official said.

The Assam State Electricity Board too has also geared up to supply extra power demand. source: assam tribune
