Durga Puja Guwahati, Beware of women pickpockets

Beware of women pickpockets, City Police urges puja revellers
Correspondent
GUWAHATI, Oct 5 – This time during puja when you travel on a highly-crowded bus or pass through a heavily congested area, do keep track of people moving alongside you, even if she is a good-looking woman and treats you with an appealing smile.

For, the city police have warned against a group of women pickpockets, who are on the prowl this puja season. The police too are going a step ahead in ensuring all precautions by engaging a special team of spotters or informers to check such offences, especially in crowded areas.

“This is something new to this part of the country but it has made a serious impact on the crime scenario in a very short time,” said a senior police official while talking to this correspondent, adding, “The city police would engage some of its spotters to keep a close eye on any such suspicious movement, even if she is a woman.”

“Earlier, pick-pocketing used to be the domain of males but in the last six months or so, the fairer sex has outclassed their male counterparts in this field, especially in the city,” the official pointed out.

“We have registered more than 30 such cases in the last few months where people have alleged that they have been robbed off their belongings by a woman, who was travelling in the same bus. The fact that we, till this point of time, do not have a proper track record of these women, makes it difficult to track them down,” the official stated.

“At times, they even travel with a newborn child to escape suspicious eyes and the fury of public ire if she is caught while performing the mischievous act,” the official revealed.

“They, like their male counterparts, operate in pairs and preferably target women more than men,” the official stated.

Another senior police official, when asked, informed that women are getting engaged in anti-social activities, be it pick-pocketing, car-lifting or any other serious offences. source: assam tribune
