NEW DELHI, Oct 18 – Coming together of Amar Singh of Samajvadi Party (SP) and Assam United Democratic Front (AUDF) president, Badruddin Ajmal has left the State Congress leaders jittery. A State Congress MP said they sense trouble for the ruling Party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, if the two parties firm up their newfound friendship.
In an apparent bid to corner the ruling UPA Government particularly the Congress Party, the wily general secretary of SP, yesterday, enlisted the support of Ajmal and Trinamool Party chief, Mamata Banerjee to high-light the plight of the ‘minorities.
The trio visited Jamia Nagar to sympathise the gunning down of a terror suspect by Delhi Police. The leaders addressed a public gathering of about 10,000 people, though they did not talk politics.
The SP even made an announcement that a delegation would soon visit all riot hit areas of the country, including the trouble-torn Darrang and Udalguri districts.
The development has not only left the AICC but also the State Congress leaders anxious, given the proximity of polls.
Though all attempts by the Congress Party to woo AUDF has come copper, these leaders blame Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi and PCC president, Bhubaneswar Kalita for hardening of stance by Ajmal.
A leader said that AUDF was willing to join hands with the Congress Party to fight the Lok Sabha polls, after AGP decided to cosy up with BJP. But the chief Minister’s merger proposal put things back to square one, said the Rajya Sabha MP
A section of the Congress leaders are again planning to meet president, Sonia Gandhi and AICC general secretary in-charge for Assam Verappa Moily to discuss the impasse. A delegation of Congress MPs that curiously enough also included PCC chief had met the Congress president couple of months back on the same issue to press for alliance with AUDF.
The MPs, many of whom, are going to face the electorate in couple of months time are wary of the reactions of the minority community, particularly after the strife in Darrang and Udalguri districts. In the last Assembly polls, AUDF bagged10 seats with an impressive vote share of 16.12 per cent, leaving the Congress gasping for breath.
With an unified AGP not formally joining the NDA, the prospects of a loose pact among AGP, BJP, AUDF, the left, NCP, BPPF and SP has fouled up the mood of many a Congressmen. As it is AGP leaders enjoy a close friendship with SP leadership, as erstwhile partners of the UNPA.
One such MP said that they held AUDF more than unified AGP a bigger threat of spoiling the game for them in the elections.
Officially though, the SP has an alliance with the Congress at the Centre, though the two parties enjoy a bitter-sweet relations. source: assam tribune
