AGP demands Gogoi’s resignation

Staff reporter
GUWAHATI, Oct 18 – The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) today demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for the “failure of the Government to protect the life and property of the people of Assam”. Addressing a Press conference here today, AGP president Chandra Mohan Patowary today said that the Chief Minister lost the moral right to stay in power after the ethnic riots in Udalguri and Darrang districts. He said that the inmates of the relief camps accused the Government for its failure protect the life and properties of the people and the camp inmates are still feeling insecured and there have been allegations that provocative statements by few Ministers resulted in deterioration of the situation.

The AGP president said that a number of major ethnic violence took place in Assam during the Congress regime.

He pointed out that a series of ethnic riots took place in Assam in 1991 during Congress rule, while, during the tenure of the present Government, ethnic riots took place in the hill districts, in Goalpara and also in the districts of Darrang and Udalguri. He said that instead of levelling allegations against the opposition, the Chief Minister should have tried to bring the situation under control to protect the life and property of the people.

The regional party today launched an all out attack against the Chief Minister and said that he was only interested in mud slinging and not in solving the burning problems of the State. Patowary said that the Chief Minister, who has been making light comments on the serious issue of infiltration of foreigners, is a threat to the security and integrity of the nation.

The AGP president said that the regional party has already admitted its mistakes and apologised to the people of Assam for the same. But the Congress should also be ready to apologise to the people of Assam for its “misdeeds” since Independence. “The Congress today is not the Indian national Congress which spearheaded the country’s freedom movement. The Congress is run by only one family these days,” he added. He also said that instead of making light comments on the internal affairs of the AGP, the Chief Minister should concentrate on solving the problems of people of Assam. He also pointed out that by making frequent comments on the unification of regional parties, the Chief Minister proved that he was apprehensive of the unification.

Meanwhile, on the party’s preparation for the Lok Sabha polls, Patowary said that the AGP is ready to face the polls any day. He said that the AGP has already agreed to go for seat sharing with the BJP and efforts are also on to prevent division of anti-Congress votes. He revealed that the AGP has received an invitation to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) but the party has not yet taken any decision in this regard. source: assam tribune
