Panchayati Raj receives a boost in Arunachal

CORRESPONDENT
ITANAGAR, Sept 27 – Arunachal Government will notify the activity map under Arunachal Pradesh Panchayati Raj Act, 1997 soon to empower the Panchayati Raj institutions at the grassroot level for paving the way of smooth functioning of self-governance in the State.

Union Panchayati Raj Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar is expected to release the activity map for proper demarcation of powers and functions of Panchayati Raj in the State. The non-notification of map activity had reportedly left Aiyar livid.

The hurried move of the State Government for release of the activity map came after its “unjustified delay” came under fire from Aiyar, who made his displeasure apparent to two Zilla Parishad chairpersons, who claimed that the Union Minister castigated the Dorjee Khandu Government for buckling under the pressure of his own party MLAs, who opposed the decision of devolution of powers to panchayats for self-governance.

Two chairpersons, Nabam Aka and Likha Tongum, claimed that Aiyar was peeved at non-notification of activity map of Panchayati Raj in Arunachal Pradesh.

When State Panchyati Raj Minister Tako Dabi declared today during the opening session of a three-day training-cum-workshop of elected women representatives that the State Government would stick to its stand of devolving power to Panchayats foiling any move from the MLAs of his party to delay the process, it became all too clear that the State Government wanted to extricate itself from any further ‘embarrassment’.

“We reiterate our pledge to devolve powers to Panchayats to aid the government maintain transparency. The government is not bothered even if its own MLAs oppose the move.” source: assam tribune
