‘Steps will be initiated to curb crime against women, students of NE’

GUWAHATI, Oct 31: Expressing concerns over the increasing rate of crime against women and girls from the Northeast in Delhi, Union Minister of State for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath said her ministry is planning to initiate steps to help youngsters from the Northeast.

Addressing the meeting of State Women’s Commission, local women’s NGO and other development groups on the ‘Protection of North Eastern Students in Delhi’ at the National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development (NIPCCD) today, Tirath said the ministry is in talks with the DoNER to come up with something concrete in this regard. The plans include undertaking of a media campaign to create awareness about the culture and traditions of Northeast region in Delhi, setting up of a helpline for women where any complaint of misbehaviour with them can be reported, identification of ‘bed and breakfast rooms’ for the Commonwealth Games 2010, designation of women protection officers all over Delhi, issuing of Unique Identification Number etc, to name a few.

The proposed 500-room working women’s hostel at Delhi was nearing completion and would provide a safe environment to students and working women, she added.

The Minister who arrived in Guwahati today visited Anganwadi centres at Ganesh Nagar and Bongaon, and addressed meetings at the NIPCCD, on the occasion of Rashtriya Sankalpa Divas to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
