Straight contest in Salmara, triangular fight in Dhekiajuli

GUWAHATI, Oct 20: A number of candidates, including two Congress candidates, filed their nomination papers today for the by-polls slated for October 7.

While Bhimananda Tanti of the INC filed his nomination papers for Dhekiajuli LAC, his party colleague and former minister Wazed Ali Choudhury filed his nomination papers for South Salmara LAC today. AGP candidate for Dhekiajuli Shiva Charan Sahu will file his nomination papers tomorrow. South Salmara LAC is set for a straight contest between INC’s Wazed Ali Choudhury and AIUDF’s Abdur Rahman Ajmal, and BJP candidate Safiqul Hussain may not make any dent. The AGP has left the seat for BJP. South Salmara has as many as 1,32,216 voters, and 85.24 per cent of them are Muslims.

Dhekiajuli, on the other hand, is set for a triangular contest with AGP candidate Shiv Charan Sahu, Congress candidate Bhimananda Tanti and AIUDF candidate Lenin Basumatary being equally poised. The constituency with a total of 1,61,575 voters has 32.91 per cent Bodo and 36.57 per cent tea tribe voters. Both the AGP and the INC workers are not satisfied with the selection of their candidates in the constituency. Submission of nomination papers will conclude tomorrow. THE SENTINEL
