Singh sings Central package tune for Congress victory

PASIGHAT, Oct 3: On his second visit to Arunachal Pradesh, this time to garner support for the Congress for the forthcoming Assembly election, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh today harped on the implementation of various Central schemes in the State during the last five years, particularly emphasizing the much-vaunted Prime Minister’s Package worth Rs 24,000 crore announced by him during his first visit to Itanagar on January 31 last year.

Addressing a huge crowd at Pasighat here this morning, Dr Singh reminded the people that as per its commitment the Congress had developed the State at par with other States of the country, especially in the last five years. He said that under UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s guidance, the Centre had announced the special Prime Minister’s Package for all-round and accelerated development of the State, now under various stages of implementation.

Laying stress on connectivity in and of the State, Dr Singh informed the audience that construction of the two-lane trans-Arunachal Pradesh highway is on full swing, which would connect at least 11 district headquarters and cover about 1,500 km across the State. The project is slated to be completed by 2013. The Prime Minister said another 850 km of roads is under construction for connecting the remaining district headquarters. This apart, a four-lane highway is slated to be completed within the next two to three years that would connect Itanagar with rest of the country, he said.

Dr Singh also maintained that air and rail connectivity was another sector that the Centre had been emphasizing. Under the Prime Minister’s Package, a Rs 156-crore railway project is under implementation to connect Itanagar with Harmuti, which is expected to be completed by 2014, while one modern airport is also coming up at Itanagar and works of Advanced Landing Grounds (ALGs) at Tuting, Mechuka, Pasighat, Vijainagar and Wallong are under progress, he said, adding that the existing airfields at Ziro, Aalo, Daporijo and Tezu are also under the process of revamping and modernization.

Accepting the fact that rain-fed floods have been creating havoc in the State since several years, Dr Singh said that the Centre had agreed to sanction Rs 400 crore to mitigate the problem and several projects had already been implemented.

The Prime Minister lauded the Congress government of the State for implementing the Central schemes successfully while continuing with its own welfare projects. He specially praised the State government for evolving its own relief and rehabilitation policy and said that the people of the State would surely acknowledge the contributions of their government in their own ways.

Thanking the people of the State for sending Congress MPs from both the parliamentary constituencies of the State to the Lok Sabha, Dr Singh reiterated that the UPA was committed to the cause of Arunachal Pradesh and appealed for similar support in the form of votes in the forthcoming Assembly elections.

“The Congress is the only party in the country which is committed to taking every section of the society with it along the path of development, taking special care of the underprivileged,” he added. THE SENTINEL
