SILCHAR, Oct 15: A group of at least 40 women have allegedly assaulted the general secretary of an NGO in Bhaga Rijma Begum owing to alleged corruption in the appointment of Anganwadi workers and helpers. It has been alleged that Rijma Begum and her husband Faizur Rahman Borbhuiya had collected money from the poor women of the locality assuring them of appointment in the ICDS project.
Sources said a group of women reportedly attacked the NGO office and ransacked it before beating Rijma, Faizur and another member of the NGO, Salema Begum. It was also reported that the mob tied the hands of Rijma and allegedly paraded her to the Dholai PS until the police came for her rescue. Rijma and Salema are currently under treatment in the Silchar Medical College and Hospital.
A syndicate of brokers, reportedly patronized by the district Congress leaders, had collected money from the poor and helpless women assuring them appointment in the ICDS project. But, the government stopped further appointments due to the alleged corrupt practices. As a result, the candidates who had sold their land and property to give money to the brokers resorted to agitation demanding their money back. THE SENTINEL
