DIGBOI, Sept 23 – The golden jubille edition of the Ram Leela performance at Digboi got off to a glittering start in the Refinery Field in the presence of an August gathering on the breezy evening of September 20 last. The inaugural function, compered by Dr Hare Ram Pathak, began with melodious invocation to goddess Saraswati in accompaniment to a rhythmic dance sequence.

The dignitaries on the stage included BS Mishra – president of the organising committee, Subrato Ghosh – executive director of IOCL (AOD) as the chief guest, Sankarlal Sarma – a nanagenerian social activist, Dr Nareswar Sarma – DGM of AOD Hospital, Parameswar Dube - president of the All Assam Bhojpuri Sanmilan from Dhubri, Dr R R Singh, B R Yadav - retd founder principal of Rashtriya Vidyalaya, HN Sarma - retd principal of Margherita College and social activist, Tarun Hazarika - president of AOC Labour Union, Kailash Gupta - vice president of All Assam Bhojpuri Sanmilan.

The function began with the lighting of the sacred lamps by the chief guest, Subrato Ghosh in the presence of the other guests around. He also released the souvenir edited by Dr Hare Ram Pathak. The souvenir is sure to find its place in the permanent acquisition of good libraries as an inviolable reference material to the researchers of the Ramayana lore.

Ghosh in his speech said that the Ramayana was still a potent force in the pan-Indian social fabric cutting across religious boundaries because of its unageing repository of human values and the abiding interest of its story. The institution of Ram Leela had been a popular and instructive cultural event through its enactment of the whole saga of the Ramayana, he said. Ghosh appreciated the efforts of the organising committee in the continuance of the performance of this noble event for fifty long years in such a remote corner of the country as Digboi and assured to extend every possible help to them in future from AOD sources. He called upon the younger generation to emulate the great ideals embedded in the Ramayana and thereby become good citizens of the future. The president of All Assam Bhojpuri Sanmilan, Parameswar Dubey also addressed the gathering.

Earlier, the guests were felicitated by Awadhesh Shahi and Lalita Gupta, two important office bearers of the organising committee. Indra Singh’s Bhajan gave a lyrical finish to the inaugural programme.

The golden jubilee edition of the Ram Leela is being performed by a group from Brindavan named Shri Bankebihari Ram Leela, Ram Leela Mandal directed by Swami Lakshman Prasad Sharma. Swamiji claimed that his group stood for the pure form in its presentation. ASSAM TRIBUNE
