SHILLONG, Sept 21: Minister of State for Urban Affairs Paul Lyngdoh assured the people of Mawlai that services at Marten, a place being used to dump garbage by Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) in Mawlai Nongkwar, will be developed in a scientific manner. Paul Lyngdoh and SMB CEO H Shangpliang made an inspection at Marten after the Mawlai Rangbah Snhongs along with the Mawlai Town Dorbar, social organizations and Mawlai MLA Founder Strong Cajee demanded the government to remove the Marten from Mawlai as people have been complaining about air pollution. In course of his visit, Paul Lyngdoh said, “To develop services of garbage disposal at Marten, construction will be done in a scientific manner.” Lyngdoh further said, “According to the detail project report, Rs 4.5 crore has been sanctioned for the project at Marten. Huge investment is needed to make sure that it is well-constructed and not affecting the health of people.” Since the old plant that was used to convert 120 tonnes of garbage collecting daily from Shillong city into fertilizers is very old, Lyngdoh said, “This compost plant will be constructed with new technology. The first phase of the project Rs 2.5 crore has been sanctioned,” adding, “The first phase of the project will start functioning from the month of December and will be completed within six months.”
Lyngdoh also said the government has got another five acre of land near Marten for the purpose. SMB consultant Chris Cajee said, “The first phase of the project is the compost plant that would be used for converting the biodegradable wastes into fertilizers whereas in the second phase land will be used for dumping non-biodegradable wastes.” THE SENTINEL
