Durga Puja in Majuli, Jorhat

JORHAT, Sept 25: In stark contrast to the air of festivity prevalent in the mainland, the island of Majuli is an oasis of calm. Never had this seat of Vaishnavaite religion and culture, which forms a sub-division of Jorhat district, witnessed Durga Puja.

Auniati Xatradhikar Dr Pitambar Deva Goswami told this correspondent that the neo-Vaishnavaite religion did not permit Shakti worship.

“The people here are largely worshippers of Lord Vishnu and the month of Kartik, (roughly beginning in mid-October to mid-November) is important for us as the Raax festivities which celebrate the life and love of Lord Krishna, falls in this month”, Dr Deva Goswami said. “Dr Deva Goswami further said that this month of Ashwin of the Saka calendar was usually a busy month in which preparations for the raax bhaonas went on in right earnest. Preparation are on to erect almost 20 to 30 stages, make costumes for the dramas which enact a part of Lord Krishna’s life, practise sessions, etc., will start soon”, he further said.

On the other hand, the streets of Jorhat are jam-packed with people indulging in the last minute shopping and a frenzy of activity is seen at the pandals with decorators erecting awnings and putting up facades. The only area in Majuli which is jam-packed are the ferry ghats with people from the mainland but working in Majuli are making a beeline to go back to the towns to spend the puja holidays at home.
