Durga Puja Festive mood grips Guwahati City

GUWAHATI, Sept 26: Durga Puja, the festival that epitomizes the victory of good over evil is being celebrated across the country with enthusiasm. It is believed that Durga is an incarnation of power that exists in every element of this universe.

Guwahati observed the maha-ashtami puja of Maa Durga with gusto today, along with the rest of the State. More than 500 puja committees have organized Durga Puja in different parts of the city. Colourful puja pandals, attractive decorations and varied themes have given a face-lift to the entire city.

Colourful lights and attractive decorations have made the pandal even more attractive.The 90-year old Dharapur puja committee has a glorious past. It has been organizing puja since 1919 and has witnessed history in the form of World War II, the Indian National Movement and India’s Independence. A remarkable feature of this puja committee is that instead of offering animal sacrifice to Durga Maa, it offers baran mala comprising bananas, beetle nuts, curd etc.

In a survey done across the city at the joint initiative of the Times of India group and Topcem Cement and conducted by experts like noted cine personalities Pranjal Saikia and Purnima Saikia, Kalibari Rest Camp Puja has won the Best Puja Award. Ganeshguri Baruwari Puja has won the award for Best Idol and Bamunimaidam Puja for Best Pandal. THE SENTINEL
