DIBRUGARH, Sept 29: Vijaya Dashami passed off peacefully in Dibrugarh on Monday.
The fears that the rains would play spoilsport after there were showers on the days preceding the Durga Puja were proved wrong as the festival saw clear skies and the temperature soaring. The celebrations at Marwari Patty, Jhalukpara, India Club, Municipality, Jyoti Nagar and Graham Bazar were the major attractions with people flocking to these places. The last was one of the most talked about pandal, which revolved round the theme of a zoo. Iron mesh was used to create the trunk of a peepal tree that had the pedestal of the idol of Durga Puja as well as animals like elephants and tigers.
The authorities took several steps to ensure that no untoward incident happened during the festival. Following the declaration of the puja days by the district administration as dry days, liquor shops remained closed. CCTVs were set up in quiet a few pandals, with plainclothesmen and police personnel keeping a close watch on the proceedings at the pandals in the town. Due to the various steps taken by the police administration, eve-teasing was at an all-time low.
The immersion of Goddess Durga’s idols started at the bank near the SP’s office and Maijan Ghat after mid-noon and continued till eight at night. This year, Durga Puja was held at eighty-seven different places in the town.
Meanwhile, the puja days saw the worrying trend of toy guns being in high demand among children, their prohibitive cost having no effect on the brisk sale. Despite the boxes of certain toys specifying that they were meant for children above fourteen years, boys below that age were seen sporting them.
There were no reports of any casualties in accidents during the festival. THE SENTINEL
