Turmoil in BJP as Kiren Rijiju resigns

GUWAHATI/ NEW DELHI, Aug 24: The BJP seems to be in a tight spot following the national committee’s decision to expel senior leader Jaswant Singh from the party. Coupled with the subsequent resignation of senior national leader Surendra Kulkarni from the party, the internal politics raging inside the party can at best be termed as hot.

Even though Northeast BJP organizing secretary P Chandrasekhar said that Singh’s expulsion would not affect the functioning of the party in the Northeast in any way, the resignation of former Arunachal Pradesh MP Kiren Rijiju from the party today proved otherwise.

Rijiju, who joined the Congress today, said he was determined to serve the people of the State at maximum capacity and after thorough retrospection, he felt Congress was the right platform for the purpose keeping in mind the political scenario of the country where people’s mandate were in favour of the party in the recent Lok Sabha polls.

“I don’t see much role as a member of BJP to serve the people and the State,” he commented and added that his joining was unconditional and decided not to contest in the Assembly polls due on October next. “Arunachal is a sensitive State and we need to have like-minded leaders to come under a common umbrella to serve the cause of the State,” he commented adding, “It is a historical moment for me to take a political decision believing that whatever I do will benefit Arunachal.” When contacted by The Sentinel, Rijiju said that he would go to New Delhi in the next couple of days and formally announce his decision to join the Congress in the presence of AICC general secretary and Arunachal Pradesh in-charge V Narayanswamy.

In view of the approaching Assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh, Rijiju’s sudden resignation from the party is sure to hit the BJP hard. It is also bound to demoralise BJP members in the other north-eastern States.

In another development, BJP convenor Debasish Dutta also resigned from the party today to join the Trinamool Congress. Needless to say, the resignation of the two BJP leaders have lent a new twist to the turmoils raging inside the BJP.

The Asom State Committee of the BJP wears almost a deserted look nowadays. Besides organising secretaries Harekrishna Bharali and Phani Bhushan Choudhury, most of the members having almost stopped coming to the party office. State BJP president Ramen Deka has also almost settled down in New Delhi after winning the parliamentary election from Mangoldoi constituency. Even though he had delegated his duties to three Vice-Presidents of the party, they too have not been discharging their responsibilities.

Meanwhile, senior BJP national leader Sudangshu Mittal has also been camping in Guwahati for the last three days trying to sort out the confusion inside the State unit of the party, while at the same time maintaining links with its alliance partner AGP. THE SENTINEL
